PERSONA

To Shin, life is a joke. A big. Fucking. Joke. His mental condition has blessed him with both auditory and visual hallucinations, which he's had for so long, that he's deemed them true. Who knows? Maybe they are. Being diagnosed as an undifferentiated schizophrenic, he believes that he can hear other people's thoughts; and other people's thoughts are not all that pretty. Piling the crazy on top of that, here's a list of other things that he's "heard," or "felt": Trees, his dead parents, his dead grandparents, a horse, the mountains, each snowflake as it falls (that was sure a crazy day!), the sound of a penny dropping two miles away, the ocean, you, the past, his own death, where what the cafeteria food sounded like when it died, photosynthesis, and a question mark. That's just a few.

So, more faults aside from this crazy?

Most of his actions stem from his condition, insert a good "do this, what the hell for?" explanation here. He's lazy, and would rather get up at noon then go to class on time, he skips whenever the opportunity presents itself, and spends a lot of his time with his friends and fixing an old bike that mysteriously fell into his hands. He's cocky, stubborn and sarcastic, and a downright prick. He likes to speak publicly, and seems to have no trouble making speeches (even if he makes them up as he goes along). He seems to arrogantly confident in both his own abilities and opinions, and because of that he comes off as pretentious; because he kind of is. He's often moody, swinging from his highs to his lows, and it makes him hard to miss if he's pissy. He has an aura of pissiness that can be spotted from a mile away. Anyone and everyone around him will feel the consequences if he's in a bad mood. He comes off as apathetic and uninterested when someone's (including teachers) babbling on about something that he could care less about, and will eventually voice his dissatisfaction with the current subject. He's an extremist in every sense of the word, so anything that he feels gets magnified ten fold not only to him, but to the entire community. If he feels something greatly, he'll take action, but he isn’t against letting others take actions for him. If he feels passionate about it (see: his sister), he'll do the job himself; and if he could care less, eh, well, someone else will do it eventually (see: Bunshichi). He won't get involved unless he's properly prodded in the right direction. He either has little care for his own life, or enjoys the thrill of the near-death experience. He's recklessly suicidal, and dangerously competitive. The mix makes for a bad combination.

He takes extreme interests in both mechanics and Japanese sword techniques, and (on the contrast to his "cutting off the semi with my motorcycle!" game) enjoys lazy days where he can tweak his bike without being bothered. He also likes foods with MSG in it, maybe that accounts for his mental condition, who knows.

Inside he is always torn between his love for his sister and the terror of the limits of his own mind, Shin lives his life struggling between madness and sanity; his morals flushed away by the voices in his head. He's secretive and sensitive, always struggling with his idea of "light" and "dark." He believes that the only living creature tethering him to the Earth is his sister Maya, who he has an obsession with. His fondness for her, and his protection for her well being goes far beyond normal "brotherly love."

HISTORY

Shin always seemed like a normal kid. When he was younger, he was charismatic and made friends easily. Through kindergarten and first grade he was surrounded by people who adored him. The Natsume family was happy to be blessed with their first son, who they played favorites with over their younger daughter, Maya. Shin flourished under the attention, not really paying much mind to his smaller sibling.

When Shin was ten, he started showing outward symptoms of a mental disorder: Hallucinations, emotional dysregulation, abrupt mood swings, and paranoid delusions. After a particularly violent event where Shin smashed all the chinaware, making Kaima and his wife force themselves to treat him medically. He was diagnosed first, with borderline personality disorder, until his symptoms began to worsen. Frightened for their safety, his parents would lock him in his room at night. Later, they began to do so during the day, feeling it was the best for their son and their growing family. Maya, his younger sister, was the only one who would visit him. She brought him supper, and would occasionally sit with him. It was then that he began to grow attached to her. He withdrew from sixth grade, and was home schooled until his freshman year. During that time he was put in a mental institution, where he was treated for his disorder with electrolysis. He was later diagnosed as a schizophrenic.

Upon his withdrawl from the institution and his arrival home, his parents informed him that they were sending him out of state to stay with another family member. In retaliation, before he left, he burned the house down, killing his parents. The authorities said they never pinpointed the arsonist, but in reality they knew. Shin was taken in for questioning, and told as long as they were allowed to use him as a human experiment, that he would be allowed to live as he liked. He arrived back in high school his freshman year and started KATANA, a martial arts club. It has been going for two years strong, even with just the few members it has.
